Video Poker Strategy

Since there are so many different online Video Poker games, there isn’t exactly one specific strategy that guarantees a win. However, here are some common strategies that can be applied to each specific game. They’ll keep you safe and hopefully making some great profits.

1. This is an optimal strategy for Jacks or Better. When looking at your opening hand, sometimes there are two different moves you could make. Which cards should you keep, which should you discard? Here’s a list, from highest to lowest, of hands you should keep.

  1. Four of a kind, straight flush, royal flush
  2. 4 to a royal flush
  3. Three of a kind, straight, flush, full house
  4. 4 to a straight flush
  5. Two pair
  6. High pair
  7. 3 to a royal flush
  8. 4 to a flush
  9. Low pair
  10. 4 to an outside straight
  11. 2 suited high cards
  12. 3 to a straight flush
  13. 2 unsuited high cards (if more than 2 then pick the lowest 2)
  14. Suited 10/J, 10/Q, or 10/K
  15. One high card
  16. Discard everything

2. With the original deal, if you have nothing worth keeping, here’s a general strategy in order of preference

  1. Keep any two suited high cards
  2. Keep any three suited, toss the unsuited
  3. Three unsuited high cards
  4. Keep any two unsuited high cards
  5. Keep any single high card

3. With Jokers Wild, remember that only K and A are high cards. Here is a general strategy for that game

  1. Keep a Joker no matter what
  2. Don’t keep an inside straight
  3. Straight flushes are easier to get and pay quite a bit

4. Here are strategies for All American, another popular Video Poker game

  1. Prefer inside straights over one or two high cards
  2. Prefer 4 card outside straights and 4 card flushes over pairs, even higher ones
  3. Hold any 3 cards to a flush

5. Terms Defined

  1. High Card: Jack, Queen, King or Ace
  2. Outside Straight: Open ended straight that can be completed at either rend (4, 5, 6, 7)
  3. Inside straight: A straight with a missing card in the middle (4, 5, 7, 8)
